Perk’s New Bed
douglas fir
and douglas fir veneers, poplar; 42” high x 70” wide
x 93” long
Perk’s contemporary new digs were designed
by some famous guy from Yale. Perk wanted his new bed to compliment
the famous guy’s laminated doug fir beams and minimalist
lines. The niches in the headboard hold alarm clocks, books,
and anything else one might need bedside. |

Beth and Van’s New Wave
Bed
cherry and cherry veneers,
figured soft maple, nogal; 46” high x 66” wide
x 106” long
Beth and Van have had a long love affair
with the sea, and wanted a sleigh bed that evoked the waves
near their Connecticut home. We carved nautilus shells
at the head and foot of the bed in case anyone missed the
allusion.

S and P Lingerie Chest (and stool)
figured
soft maple, purpleheart, nogal, quartered mahogany; 20” deep x 20” wide x 76” high
A nice couple from Maryland really liked a lingerie chest
I built a while
ago, but wanted a little more drawer space. We increased
all the dimensions, and even though Steve and Pam are pretty
tall
folks I was afraid they might not be able to peek in the
top drawer -- hence the matching stool. |

Pencil
Post Bed:
Curly soft maple;
64” wide x 84” long x 84” high.
When Marcia
and Alan moved out of New York for good, they decided they
deserved a real bed. I encouraged this thinking. I matched
the finish of the tiger maple to a beautiful old dresser that
sits next to it. |

C and C Bed:
Figured anigre veneers, quartered
bubinga veneers and solids, wenge; 56" high x 63" wide x 88"
long.
The head and foot boards feature
the same undulating curves as the matching bench. Though there
is certainly an element of fun in these designs, the feel
of the whole room is quite peaceful.

C and C Dresser/Armoire:
Figured anigre veneers, quartered
bubinga solids and veneers, wenge; 23" wide x 78" high x 84"
long.
The undulating drawer faces
made this an extremely challenging, but satisfying, piece
to build. It shares those curves with the entire bedroom set,
giving the room a surprisingly serene feel.

Alexander's Bunk Beds:
Maple, pine, acrylic paints,
resins; 45" wide x 81" long x 84" high.
Over one hundred hand-carved
and -painted fish, not to mention clams, scallops and starfish,
festoon these wonderfully whimsical beds. Their playful nature
belies the substantial amount of work, engineering, and special
tooling involved.

M and F Bed:
Figured maple veneers, quartered
maple veneers, quartered cherry veneers and solids; 54" high
x 92" long x 112" wide.
In addition to its striking shape,
this bed features a lot of storage underneath. There are built-in
lights in the headboard alcove for reading |

M and F Armoire and Dresser:
Figured maple veneers, quartered
maple veneers, quartered cherry veneers and solids; 24" deep
x 52" wide x 84" high (armoire); 20" deep x 72" wide x 84"
high (dresser).
These two pieces, and the accompanying
bed, are an exercise in interesting juxtapositions of sculptural
volumes.
That means they don't look
like a bunch of boards glued together, but rather parts with
mass assembled into larger forms.

Sleigh Bed:
Mottled makore veneers, mahogany,
wenge; 56" high x 84" wide x 96" long.
This bed was commissioned by a
husband as a gift to his angel-loving wife; he wanted a sleigh
bed that actually looked like a sleigh. The foot of the bed
is a built-in blanket chest. All the magnificient low-relief
carving was done by Fred X [this is his entire middle name --
there is no period] Brownstein of North Bennington, Vermont.

B and B Bed:
Figured maple veneers and solids,
walnut; 66" high x 84" long x 120" wide.
A college friend from California
developed the concept of this bed for himself and his wife;
I just cleaned up the rough edges. What I remember most vividly
about his home was that he grew apricots, grapes and citrus
in the back yard. Coming from Vermont, this seemed very unfair
to me. |

Four-Poster:
Mahogany, curly maple; 64"
wide x 76" high x 84" long.
This bed is a reinterpretation
of an antique bed the customer loved, but was sized improperly
for her bedroom. I changed the scale of the posts to fit in
the room, and sized the frame for a modern mattress.
